FIRE EXTINGUISHERS |
In addition to smoke detectors, a home should have at
least one portable fire extinguisher. Remember that these small extinguishers are designed
for small fires only. |
Use an
extinguisher only if you know you have the right one for the type of fire and you already
know how to use it. |
A
multipurpose fire extinguisher, marked "ABC", is probably best because it is
effective against all types of fire: those fueled by wood, paper, rubber, and most
plastics (Type A fire); those fueled by flammable liquids (Type B fire); and those ignited
by live electrical equipment such as televisions, radios, and other appliances (Type C
fire). |
Try to
extinguish a fire only after calling the fire department. Even then, keep your back to an
exit, and leave immediately if the fire threatens your escape route. If the fire persists
for more than 30 seconds, get everybody out of the house. |
Remember "PASS" - for "Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep" - when using a fire
extinguisher. Pull the pin or other releasing mechanism. Aim low, pointing the
extinguisher nozzle (or it's horn or hose) at the base of the fire. Squeeze the handle to
release the extinguishing agent, then sweep from side to side until the fire is out. Watch
the fire area. If fire breaks out again, repeat the process. |
Extinguishers require routine care. Read your operator's manual, and ask your dealer how
often your extinguisher should be inspected and serviced. Disposable fir extinguishers can
be used only once, and reusable fire extinguishers must be recharged after every use. |
